A Review Study on Geovernmental Health Examination Program for the Elderly

Abstract
As we enter into the aged society, the rising health care cost for the elderly is emerging as a big social burden. This is attributed to the inappropriate health care system which doesn't ensure medical security for the elderly and
characteristics
of
geriatric diseases.
Accordingly, the current medical care system should be examined and the governmental health examination program for the elderly which is a way of providing medical security system for the aged needs special attention.
In this view, this study reviewed the present status, problems and improment measures of the governmental health examination program for the elderly which has been implemented since 1983.
As a result, the decreasing number of elderly people who want to take the governmental health examination, inadequate examination items, lack of follow-up care service following the health examination, low examination fees for medical
institutions
are
turned out to be major problems.
In the context of Korean public health care system, the following policies are recommended from the above analysis.
First, the governmental health examination system should be improved with the adjustment of examination items, expansion of population covered to all people aged over 65, expansion of primary examination institutions.
Second, the linkage between examination results and treatment, welfare, long-term care system should be strengthened.
Third, the implementation of comprehensive health care program for the elderly is needed by establishing a section specialized in health care/education for the elderly.
